Rare Late-90s Matthew Butler Leather Arm Chair

An exceptional piece of early-2000s Australian industrial design history. This original armless lounge chair was designed by the highly acclaimed Melbourne designer Matthew Butler for his boutique label Bluesquare circa 1999–2000. Butler—who later gained international recognition as a design manager for Tom Dixon in London and founded the award-winning sustainable brand Zaishu. He also designed the T-Series modular lounge system, which was famously commissioned for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, cementing its place in the timeline of modern Australian design. This one-off piece features a striking, chunky geometric profile. It would work beautifully as a standalone architectural accent chair or as a component to expand an existing T-Series sofa. It is clad in its original, high-quality tan leather, which displays an incredible warmth and minimalist presence. True to Butler’s early commitment to sustainable design, the underside retains its pristine, authentic studio backing label, complete with the handwritten production serial numbers (2518A / 5476). This intact provenance makes it a highly desirable acquisition for serious collectors of archival Australian furniture. Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The structural integrity is rock-solid, with tight, clean stitching. The tan leather has aged beautifully, with no rips or major blemishes, showing only light, authentic creasing on the seat cushion, consistent with careful residential use. The chair was recently cleaned and resprayed by a professional leather restorer.
